In this manner, the traction substation\u00a0gains the capability of redirecting the braking energy to the\u00a0power supply and the power quality indicators during the<br \/>\ntraction regime are greatly improved. The practical solution\u00a0lies in adding a shunt active power filter, accompanied by\u00a0appropriate circuits of connection on both the DC and AC<br \/>\nsides, between the DC-traction line and the primary of the\u00a0traction transformer via a dedicated recovery transformer.\u00a0To control the current provided by the shunt active filter in\u00a0both traction\/active filtering and regeneration regimes, the\u00a0indirect method of handling the supply current has been\u00a0adopted. The reference supply current during the operation\u00a0in traction regime is calculated based on instantaneous powers\u00a0provided by the concepts of the instantaneous reactive\u00a0power theory. Two compensation strategies have been implemented\u00a0for this operation mode, i.e. the total compensationof the current harmonics and reactive power and the\u00a0partial compensation (only the current harmonics). In regeneration\u00a0mode, the traction rectifier is blocked and the\u00a0reference supply current is given by the voltage controller.\u00a0Based on the conceived Matlab\/Simulink models of the\u00a0whole system, the proper operation is confirmed and the\u00a0good performance of the system during both traction\/filtering and regeneration regimes is shown.
