An earlier 2-D FEM\u00a0modeling of a SMES device created in FEMM software is\u00a0based on the assumption of the equality between the inductances\u00a0of the complete circular cross section toroid and of\u00a0the rectangular cross section toroid, providing an approximationfor the depth of planar model which does not take\u00a0into account the leakage magnetic flux. Therefore a 3-D\u00a0model of real geometry was realized using ANSYS software\u00a0to improve this approximation. Imposing the equality of the\u00a0magnetic field energies in 2-D and 3-D simulations, a new\u00a0value for depth of 2-D FEM planar modeling is derived as<br \/>\npolynomial regression of second order of the 3-D results,\u00a0based on two factors characterizing the geometric torus\u00a0shape: the coil inner diameter ratio and the coil thickness\u00a0ratio. The application of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and\u00a0the computation of some adjusting coefficients prove the\u00a0descriptive and predictive power of this model. The inductances\u00a0of different configurations of SMES device derived\u00a0from the new 2-D FEM modeling are compared to those\u00a0based on the earlier 2-D FEM modeling and on the 3-D<br \/>\nFEM modeling. The results indicate an underestimation of\u00a0the depth of the earlier 2-D FEM planar modeling and consequently,\u00a0of the magnetic field energy and of the inductance\u00a0for SMES devices with large inner diameter, when the leakage\u00a0magnetic flux increases.
