The addition of an active\u00a0compensator to the classical dc traction substation creates<br \/>\nthe \u201cactive substation\u201d. The active substation allows\u00a0bidirectional power flow between the power grid and the\u00a0DC catenary, which means the active power flow from the<br \/>\npower grid to the DC catenary and the recovered power\u00a0flow from the catenary back to the power grid. At the same\u00a0time, because the compensator acts like an active filter in<br \/>\nthe first case and like a power inverter in the last case, both\u00a0the consumed and recovered power are active powers. To\u00a0achieve this goal the active compensator must inject current<br \/>\nto the point of common coupling, and the typical currentcontroller is the hysteresis regulator. At the same time, the\u00a0typical approach on the injected current regulation is the<br \/>\ndirect current control, which implies the closed loop controlof the current at the compensator output, i.e. the current\u00a0through the output inductors.
